Autism & Obsessions — Dr. C's Morning Minute 110
Obsessive interests are one of the hallmark features of autism, and one of the most misunderstood. What looks from the outside like an unhealthy fixation is often, for the autistic individual, a source of genuine joy, expertise, and identity. The clinical concern arises when an obsessive interest becomes so consuming that it crowds out other necessary activities, or when it becomes a barrier to social connection and learning. The goal of clinical intervention is rarely to eliminate the interest, but to help the individual build flexibility around it, expanding their world rather than simply constraining a favorite part of it. Autism Centers of Pittsburgh incorporates special interests into individualized treatment planning. Contact us to discuss your child's profile.
