Are Autism and ADHD Related?
Autism and ADHD are distinct diagnoses, but they frequently co-occur, and they share enough overlapping features that distinguishing between them requires careful clinical evaluation. Both conditions involve attention and regulation challenges; both can affect social functioning; and both are rooted in neurological differences. Research suggests that a significant percentage of autistic individuals also meet criteria for ADHD, and vice versa. The DSM-5 formalized this by allowing both diagnoses to be made simultaneously, is a change from earlier diagnostic rules. For parents, the practical implication is that a child presenting with attention, behavioral, and social challenges may need evaluation for both. Autism Centers of Pittsburgh specializes in dual-diagnosis evaluations. Visit our Autism FAQ or contact us to discuss your child.
