Autism and Early Intervention; What Works and How Well?
Early intervention for autism is one of the most well-supported principles in developmental psychology. The earlier a child receives appropriate support, the better the outcomes across language, social, adaptive, and cognitive domains. Research consistently shows that intensive, evidence-based intervention during the preschool years can produce significant developmental gains, with some children making gains substantial enough to no longer meet diagnostic criteria. The mechanisms involve brain plasticity: young children's neural architecture is more responsive to targeted therapeutic input than older children's. ABA therapy, speech-language therapy, and occupational therapy are among the most evidence-supported early intervention approaches.
